Saving The Other From Discomfort

Al-Muṭarrif ibn Abdillah ash-Shikhkheer al-Basree (one of the eldest of the tabi’een) said to some of his brothers: “O Aboo Fulaan (Father of so-and-so), if you are in need of anything from me, then do not speak to me concerning it. Rather, write to me your request on a paper then bring it to me.  For indeed, I hate that I see in your face a discomfort from having to ask.

أَنَّ مُطَرِّفَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الشِّخِّيرِ ، قَالَ لِبَعْضِ إِخْوَانِهِ : ” يَا أَبَا فُلانٍ ، إِذَا كَانَتْ لَكَ إِلَيَّ حَاجَةٌ فَلا تُكَلِّمْنِي فِيهَا ، وَلَكِنِ اكْتُبْهَا إِلَيَّ فِي رُقْعَةٍ ثُمَّ ارْفَعْهَا إِلَيَّ ، فَإِنِّي أَكْرَهُ أَنْ أَرَى فِي وَجْهِكِ ذُلَّ السُّؤَالِ
