Do You Think That I Sell Hadeeth?

‘Eesaa bin Yoonus said: The Ameer ‘Eesaa bin Moosa sent to al-A’mash* a thousand dirhams and a book so that he would write in it hadeeth. So he wrote in it: ‘In the name of Allaah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. Say, “He is Allaah , [who is] One,”‘ and he sent it back to him. He (the Ameer) sent to him saying: “Do you think that I am not proficient in the Book of Allaah i.e. the Qur’aan?” He (al-A’mash) sent to him saying: “Do you think that I sell hadeeth?”

* He was Sulaymaan bin Mihraan, Abu Muhammad Al-Asadi Al-Kaahili Al-Kufi d.147. He was a tabi’ee.

(Imaam Shamsud-Deen Abu ‘Abdullah adh-Dhahabee’s Siyar – 6/350)
